A wound can be claused by any injurious agent & can involve any tissue or structure.
Rank & Wakefield classification: Wounds –         1. Tidy &
2. Untidy
Tidy: by sharp instruments & containing no devitalized tissue as in surgical intervention.
Untidy: Results from crushing, tearing, avulsion, vascular injuries or burns & contains devitalized tissue.
Types of wound:
1.    Bruise
2.    Contusion
3.    Hematoma
A close blunt injury.
4.   Punctured wound
5.   Bites
Open wounds usually contains foreign materials & organism are carried down.
6.   Abrasion
7.   Friction burn
8.   Laceration: like that of surgical incised wound involving skin, muscles, vessels, tendons.
9.   Traction
10.   Avulsion
Open injury associated with severe degree of tissue damage
11.Crush injury: variant of blunt injury with digloving/ compartment syndrome.
Injuries to the arteries & veins
Wound with much bleeding there is possibility that a vessel has been divided.
1st aid: bleeding can be controlled by pressure & elevation. The torn vessel must be repaired under anesthesia.
War wound & gun shot
Injuries are of different severity of tissue damage depending on Low or High velocity missiles.
Low velocity: from hand gun, results into Entry – small wound & Exit – large wound associated with severe tissue contamination with clothing, dirt or F.B.
High velocity: (from modern rifles) cause explosive pressure & results into wide spread tissue damage.

Chronic wound
Several velocities are as follows:
Ulcer: is any breach in  results from failure to heal in due time.
Treatment – Consists of specific management of the underlying cause.
Pressure sore / Bed sore / Decubitus ulcer: occurs over bony prominence due to –
                                                                                                      i.            Ischemia
                                                                                                   ii.            Moist
                                                                                                iii.            Pressure
                                                                                                iv.            Anesthetic area
Treatment –  a. To avoid pressure    b. Treatment of the wound.
